Rotary Clubs in East Hawaii will gather at Lili`uokalani Gardens to remove an invasive seaweed from Waihonu, the traditional Hawaiian fish pond at the heart of Lili`uokalani Gardens. Gorilla Ogo (Gracilaria Salicornia) is a brittle seaweed with cylindrical branches 2-5 cm in diameter. It forms thick intertwining mats up to 15 cm thick which prevents young new corals and native seaweeds from attaching to the bottom to grow. It is not a preferred food of reef dwellers. The mats of Gorilla Ogo also change the bottom habitat preventing larger animals from access to holes and crevices. It was first found in Hilo Harbor in 1971 and has spread along the coast. The removed seaweed will be added to a fill area within the park. If you would like some for your home compost area, bring a bucket with a lid and we will fill it for you.
